Freelancing 101: landing your first international client
Where to find clients, how to write a proposal that gets replies, and what to charge when you are starting out from Bangladesh.
On this page
Your first international client is the hardest one. After it, everything about freelancing — finding work, quoting, getting paid — becomes repeatable. This guide is the honest version: no promises of overnight income, just the steps that consistently work for people starting from Bangladesh.
Where clients actually come from
Marketplaces (Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer) remain the realistic starting point because they bring the clients to you. Job boards and communities — where businesses post directly — are second. Cold outreach works, but it is a skill of its own and rarely the fastest first win.
- Marketplaces — slow to start, but structured: escrow payments, reviews, and dispute processes protect both sides.
- Communities — niche Slack/Discord groups and LinkedIn, where being genuinely helpful for weeks beats any pitch.
- Referrals — after the first client, the cheapest channel. Deliver well and ask directly for one introduction.
The proposal that gets replies
Most proposals fail in the first two sentences because they talk about the freelancer, not the client's problem. The structure that works: one line proving you read the post, two lines on how you will approach their specific problem, one relevant example, and a question that invites a reply. Short beats impressive.
A proposal is not about you. It is a demonstration that you understood one specific problem better than the other forty applicants.
Pricing your first work
Charge at the lower end of your skill's honest range for the first two or three jobs, then raise your rate with each new client — not with existing ones. Your first rate is a marketing decision, not your worth. What matters is the review and the portfolio piece it buys.
Two rules protect you from the classic traps: never start substantial work before a milestone or contract exists, and keep the first project small by design — a two-week job you finish brilliantly beats a two-month job that drifts.
Getting paid safely
Use platform escrow wherever it exists. For direct clients, agree the payment method before the work, in writing. For a deeper comparison of receiving international payments in Bangladesh, read our guide to international payments.
